What This Page Shows
This page answers one question the moment it opens: what is today's date? The answer is read from your own device's clock, so it is always correct for where you are — not for a server somewhere else. Alongside the date itself you get the day of the week, the day of the year, the ISO week number, how many days remain until January 1, and the date written in both international (ISO 8601) and US formats.
Why "Today" Isn't the Same Everywhere
At any given moment, two calendar dates exist on Earth. When it is Sunday evening in Los Angeles, it is already Monday afternoon in Tokyo — the two cities sit on opposite sides of the date's daily journey around the planet. That is why this page computes everything locally in your browser: a page rendered on a server in another time zone could confidently show you yesterday or tomorrow.
The International Date Line, running through the Pacific, is where each calendar day officially begins and ends. The first place to greet a new date is the Line Islands of Kiribati (UTC+14); among the last is Baker Island (UTC−12). For a stretch of every day, those two places are a full two calendar days apart.
Day of the Year and Days Left
Counting days from January 1 gives every date a plain number from 1 to 365 — or 366 in a leap year. This ordinal date is widely used where month boundaries only get in the way: pilots and meteorologists log with it, warehouses stamp perishables with "Julian dates," and astronomers reach for continuous day counts for the same reason. The complementary number — days left in the year — is the one people actually feel: it is the countdown behind every "only N days until New Year" remark.
Week Numbers, and Why They Disagree
Ask two calendars "what week is it?" and you may get two different answers. The international standard, ISO 8601, starts weeks on Monday and defines week 1 as the week containing the year's first Thursday — which means up to three January days can still belong to the previous year's week 52 or 53. Much of Europe schedules by these numbers: factories plan deliveries in "calendar weeks," and a Swedish or German colleague saying "week 34" expects you to know it without a calendar.
The US convention counts differently: weeks start on Sunday, and week 1 is simply whichever week contains January 1. The two systems agree for most of the year and quietly diverge at its edges, which is exactly when scheduling mistakes happen. Leap Years in One Rule
A year is a leap year if it divides by 4 — unless it divides by 100 — unless it also divides by 400. So 2024 and 2028 are leap years, 1900 was not, and 2000 was. The rule exists because Earth's orbit takes about 365.2422 days: adding one day roughly every four years, then skipping three of those additions every four centuries, keeps the calendar within a day of the seasons for thousands of years.
